Why You Should Follow Your Passion

Alright, alright… Congratulations!!  You’ve made it past yet another title with the phrase “Follow Your Passion.” (Feel free to pat yourself on the back at this moment)

You see, whenever this topic is brought up (and/or shared around 1,000+ times on Facebook) I bet you that it is probably from some news source or business website (i.e. Forbes) referring to your career. Columns like “Why You Shouldn’t Follow Your Passion”,“10 Reasons Why You Should Follow Your Passion and Not the Money”, and “To find work you love, don’t (always) follow your passion” will flow down your news feed telling you one way or the other. At the end of the day, it can get pretty confusing.

When all is said and done, yes, I hope that everyone is able to find a job that they are able to pursue that they love 110%. I’m sure we all would just love the opportunity to find the job that makes tons of money and brings us complete joy. But, sadly, I don’t believe this is the case all of the time. I understand it is ultimately our choice to choose if we are happy in our positions or not; but, I think there is something more.

That, my friends, is why a passion is so important. A passion to play sports, a passion to craft, a passion to parent, a passion to learn, a passion to write, a passion to draw, a passion to build relationships, a passion for religion, a passion for serving others, and so on…

Yes, we all need to make money to survive. My day job is revolves around analyzing millions of rows of data to bring insights to others and make the business I work for come alive. But, to be honest, I’m way more passionate about playing hockey, taking photos, and spending time with my family than spending 6-8 hours a day in Excel. (Though I am a bit of an Excel nerd… #VBA #SQL #financialmodeling #PowerBI)

It’s this passion that keeps you going and keeps you alive. It’s our passion as human beings that lets us escape and improve ourselves where WE want to improve.

Heck, Science and Wellness experts have even shown that our hobbies help relieve stress… WHO THE HECK DOESN’T WANT TO DO THAT!?!?

Now, I’ll spare you the details that go behind why lowering stress/cortisol is a good thing (I’m sure most of you know enough reasons anyway). But, the point is simple. Do what you love. Because you love it.

Write. Play. Laugh. Climb. Hike. Swim. Surf. Sing… Etc.

When we are doing what we love we are able to be 100% our true selves. This is something I am striving for… and I hope you are too.

So, go ahead! Don’t be afraid follow your passion. It’s what makes us human. It’s what makes you, you.
