Keeping your kids safe from… ads?

Yep, you read the title right. And now that you’ve thought about it for a minute, you’re probably starting to remember a few Carl’s Jr. commercials right now. That’s not even the least of it, sadly. I’ve been watching my fair share of sporting events on TV where it isn’t long before you start seeing Viagra commercials either (pun totally intended). Eli is a little young now, but it won’t be long before he’ll start to ask questions about what he is seeing on TV… So, what do we do as parents? We can only record so many shows and skip commercials for so long right? Well, sort of.

I recently caught wind of something that will help us parents “change the ads” that show up. In essence, it’s like an automatic channel changer whenever your show or sporting event goes to commercial break. The device that is now out on Kickstarter that allows us, parents, to do this is called Filtrie.

The video on their website shows that this device allows you to change what type of ads show up so that you nor your family are exposed to things you don’t want to see. You want to filter out scary movie ads? Done. Filter out “booby” commercials? History. Trying to lose weight and don’t want to see ads for sweets or fast food? Outta there. Now, I haven’t had the opportunity to use the device myself. However, it seems quite promising.

I had the opportunity to talk to the owner, Jim Birch, to get a few more questions of mine answered. From that conversation I learned a few things:

  1. The device works for any device that plugs into the TV (i.e. this device goes between the TV and your cable box, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox, etc.)

  2. The device will work for regular cable TV, Satellite TV, and streaming services (like streaming sports or Hulu through an Apple TV)

  3. The long-term plan is to have Filtrie become integrated with TVs in the future so that it will work for Smart TVs that stream from the internet directly

Though this system is still in its early stages, I see a lot of promise and practical use for families down the road.
